Taliban and Women & Children
When the Taliban were leading the country from 1996 - 2001, they abolished education for girls. Since 1998, girls over the age of eight have been prohibited from attending school. Home schooling, while sometimes tolerated, was more often repressed. Last year, the Taliban jailed and then deported a female foreign aid worker who had promoted home-based work for women and home schools for girls. The Taliban prohibited women from studying at Kabul University.
How can you help the women of Afghanistan?

Famous Hollywood stars in their prime
The Resurgence in 2021
It all began when an Instagram account @nolly.babes consistently reminded the world of the preceding style of fashion. It spread like wildfire. People saw the need to return to retro sunglasses, red lipsticks, mini skirts, pleated skirts, and of course, the glossy bubble gum lipstick.
The Present
Fashion brands in trying to preserve African traditions and culture have made a blend with the Nollywood themes, African themes, and modern fashion.
While most people brought back the exact same fashion such as the retro shades, others decided to use it as an inspiration to bigger designs.

Her name is Funmi, a Nigerian name in Yoruba language that translates to “for me” or “give me.” My mother is the one who gave me the mental and moral support to start this brand, when I had only $200 and no formal fashion training back in 2017. Her name is Funmi and she was the one that saw this dress and gave me the courage to produce it for other women to wear with confidence.

Just like my mother, the Funmi dress symbolizes strength, freedom and everything YTPshop represents. My mom single handedly raised me as a single mother. Although my mother is a strong woman, she is a shy woman but outspoken when she has to protect me.
Today, the Funmi dress is the best selling dress and has sold in over 20 countries till date.

It’s Always Summer, timeless and ever green. When I visited Nigeria for the first time since the pandemic, I also did a photoshoot that highlights the essence of the motherland. Our YTPshop team helped to organise the shoot with other creative geniuses.
The photoshoot shows the evergreen nature of YTPshop's products. It's Always Summer in the motherland as well, with the temperature over 100 °F daily when I visited.
Summer symbolizes a feeling of freedom, excitement, and another chance, especially in 2021, given last year's summer lockdown. This year, summer feels like we have another chance to be outside.
The ever green nature of the African print aesthetics would always make every woman wearing YTPshop a confident woman. We want every woman wearing YTPshop to feel like its always summer, always excited, always liberated because YTPshop women are not only confident women but also free women.

]]>I founded YTPshop in 2017 with no formal fashion training after many years of gifting my friends with chic African-inspired clothing. I design our products in the U.S., while our gifted all-female artisans manufacture in Nigeria. Our small YTPshop team then ships these products to the U.S., where we are based and deliver from. We create small batches because every product is handmade and we believe in sustainability and slow fashion. I wrote about our milestones during our first 4 years here.
I grew with a single mother and she prioritized education. After graduating high school at 15, I took a gap year applying to universities that could fund my higher education before I received a full-ride scholarship to Wesleyan University (go Wes!) in the U.S. to study Neuroscience. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience. Then, I also got a Masters in Public Health from Yale and MBA from Wharton. Outside of YTPshop, I am a Product Manager for consumer-facing tech companies and big Afrobeats music fan.

This post is a tribute to the artisans who work behind the scene. Our YTPshop production process is simple but also cuts across two countries: The U.S. and Nigeria. Yinka designs all products in the U.S. and the YTPshop team sources the fabric from the open-air textile markets in Nigeria. Then, the YTPshop network of independent female artisans handcraft the products with love in Nigeria.

YTPshop Craftsmen:
Our YTPshop artisans are skilled with years of experience in garment production. This experience has been passed from generation to generation and meet the international standard for garment production. Our female artisans depend on the earnings made from YTPshop to support their families in Nigeria.
Nigeria is plagued with poverty and is in need of economic empowerment. At YTPshop, we empower our artisans by paying fair wages and it is our pride to show the creativity of our female artisans with the world.
Artisan spotlight:
Meet Grace, one of our first YTPshop artisans. She has been with YTPshop since 2017. She is based in Abuja and hopes to have a large fashion empire someday. Today, she mentors several fashion apprentices and makes YTPshop pieces with love.
The most recently product from the artisans is the Zamunda dress with a complementary headwrap to match. The essence of this dress is to bring a piece of the motherland wherever you may be and to also tell Yinka's coming to America story. we look forward to more designs from them, we know you do too.

My outfit
I pulled up to the reception of the Church wedding with a custom made YTPshop dress and Petals fascinator.
The Food
I was served ofada rice, a local delicacy of unpolished rice from the Yorubas, stewed Cat fish and moin moin. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting this meal, you will agree that it is yummy. I love Nigerian weddings because there is always enough food to go around.
The People
Then, I turned up for my friend’s wedding with other friends. (P/S, I got my vaccine even before attending the wedding)I got to reconnect with my old friends and family. It truly was an amazing wedding. I look forward to more weddings for me to slay.
Will I miss Nigeria? Definitely, the people, the culture, the glam. There is definitely a lot to miss.

]]> An excited me anticipating my touch down in Abuja.
How to travel to Nigeria to the USA during a pandemic?
I flew from California from U.S. to Nigeria over a 27-hour trip: 11-hour flight to London, 10-hour layover at an empty Heathrow airport, and a 6-hour flight to Abuja. It went smoothly. I had to get a negative COVID test result before arrival in Abuja and another on 7th day of arrival in Nigeria.
How to enjoy Abuja like a local?
1. Get some fruits, they are everywhere. Pro tip, if you happen to be in Nigeria during the Agbalumo (African Star Apple) season, you don't know how lucky you are. This fruit comes out once in a year and it is one of the unique fruits given to Nigerians by nature.
3. Look the part with an Afro-centric hairstyle: If you are visiting Nigeria to visit, you may also want to look the part. Nigerian artisans or hair dressers are a bundle of talents, you have a hair salon everywhere. Oh, and the 2-piece that I am wearing is Bukky and still available.
4. Get some African prints: Another thing to love about Nigeria is the African prints available. The artisans have a creative and unique way of bringing clothes to life. The picture below shows me shopping for African prints; see how many colourful prints to choose from.
From the food to the prints and people, Nigeria is a wealth of culture and heritage. What’s the one thing you love about Nigeria? Don’t be a stranger in the comment section.
